Click here to subscribe in iTunes. INTRODUCTIONMartin: Have you ever thought about starting your own business but you felt, maybe I am too young for this or maybe I am too old for this? Today we have a very young entrepreneur here on Cleverism. Hi, Chris! Who are you and what do you do?Chris: Hi, I am, I guess you could say an entrepreneur, I am the founder of, previously Appsitude which I sold, and now I am the CEO and Co-founder of Cazza Construction Technologies.Martin: Tell me about your entrepreneurial journey, so the company that you started before, what were they actually doing and the second question would be how did you grow this company that fast?Chris: It was an App and Web development company and later we moved on to doing marketing as well. Essentially if someone had an App idea, our team would build it for them and then later on we ended up helping, besides building it we also had a marketer.In terms of how we grew it, initially what happened was I went on Craigslist at the mid-end of December 2014, and I looked at people posting Ads, sending their App ideas and then I also posted an Ad offering App development services. I did it more as a test just to see if anyone would actually be interested in doing it, like wanting to pay for the service. Then within, I would say around 10 days of messaging the first person, I was able to close my first development contract for US $16,500.Martin: Wow, cool stuff.Chris: I got my first contract and what I did was, I had originally spoken with the developer and designer before to have the project to do it, and I managed the project essentially. Over that few month period we ended up having the App out and then we got more contracts as well during that time. But throughout that, every time we got a new deal, I would hire another developer or 2 depending on how big the App was, some of the projects were a lot bigger than others. Over time we just kind of kept expanding and then we had over 60 employees when we were acquired.Martin: Cool stuff. Chri s did you get paid only in cash from your customers or did you negotiate some kind of deal where you had some cash and equity component?Chris: Later on we began doing an equity component. Initially, I hadn’t really thought about it but then after some of the projects we ended up doing really well, I was like maybe we should have equity as well.So we started Appsitude accelerator, which actually is like we partner up people that had App ideas and then they would get to work with our team directly in exchange for like a lower They wouldn’t have to pay as much or sometimes I would cover their entire development cost to work on a project with them.Martin: Why do you think those customers decided to purchase this web design / app development service from you instead of all the millions of other companies who are basically providing a service in the same segment?Chris: One of the things I think happened, I mean to put it in perspective with the first client that I got, and I noticed t his a lot, a lot of them were very surprised that I was 17. I was 17 when I had started it. A lot of them were surprised to see that a 17 year old was running a company.Essentially what happened was, to put it in perspective, initially we worked on those first few projects which did well, and then in terms of like getting downloads and everything, some of them did, definitely not all of them. Then, because we established the portfolio and everything, people begun going: Oh, like you guys, this project which did really well, can you help us with this? And that is when we actually moved into more like marketing. But I think in terms of why specifically us, I think that when it comes to app development, it has one very big with personal connections; what I mean is if you are the first person they know. That they think this is the guy who does the Apps, they will often go to you. I felt that it helped a lot our business, and then also I felt that, I actually think that my age was a big advantage.Martin: Because this is not what I would have expected, what does the typical customer look for? Is it more like a 20 year old as well or is it more like a 30 or 40 or 50 year old person?Chris: It is actually varied. I mean we have had people that, we have worked with like a high school student before and his dad was a lawyer that paid for it. And then we have worked with, I think the oldest person we have worked with is like 80 or 82 or something like that.Martin: Wow. What type of App did you develop for those guys? Especially for the 80 year old guy?Chris: One of them was kind of running fitness App for like old people. It was like a group of lawyers from Michigan and they just, they gave us a huge budget for it, like they offered the budget and, we built it and everything and they didn’t even actually have it, like published publicly, they just use it privately with their friends. It made me realize, like I began to realize like I think the Apps are kind of a status symbol for people, just to say that they have their own App, and I think that was the reason why they did it.Martin: If I am thinking about why somebody would have worked with you, is it more that your App would have been more effective, more beautiful or that you have been cheaper?Chris: I wouldn’t say cheaper. In the beginning I tried to see if I can compete in that way and I realized that that is not really a great way to usually have a long term business I think that my goal was more the quality-efficiency route and being able to help give proper guidance.Not initially, in the beginning it really was just building Apps, and the idea of doing more, like I said the marketing advice and doing actual accelerator came like mid, earlier to mid this year, 2016. In terms of the selling points, I think that the selling point often was, just kind of I think when the people talk to me and they kind of see what we have done in such a short period of time, they assume Because the thing is, if you are building an App for someone it is building a business, essentially in all the cases we did it, they would go: Okay, if you can already build a successful business and you are 17 or 18 or 19, then you probably can help give me good advice with my App, or that kind of thing.Martin: If I summarize then it is basically you have identified an untapped demand which was basically on Craigslist, so almost nobody I assume or as I understood was going after this type of demand you did. Second thing is you tried to help them develop an effective App which will fulfill their objectives, and then based on that you had some kind of track record and scaled it from there.Chris: Yes, and also initially, the thing about Craigslist was, it actually wasnt very necessarily untapped, there actually was a lot of people posting. I would actually post Ads just to see how many people would message me so if I said I had an App idea and I would get like 50 emails in over like a 3 day period. But th e thing that I realized is a lot of them were just bad emails, like there would be I can build your App all over case letters and thats it. It was really crappy emails.I remember the first client had gotten he said to me, You are the first person that actually sent to me a coherent email. I was actually kind of surprised. I realized, at least with Craigslist at the time the barrier to entry was actually so low, it was what people were sending out that even if you just wrote a normal email, you could stand out.Martin: Cool stuff, great. Chris, now you have sold your business, why did you sell it?Chris: I had a side project called The Cazza which I think I said earlier that was kind of really growing on me in terms wanting to do it. So when I had the chance, when I had an offer to sell I decided to do it. I was planning to do it, to stay with it a lot longer but I realized that I really wanted to do Cazza like 100% now. So it just made sense.Martin: Great. What is Cazza?Chris: Cazza i s a construction technology company that focuses on construction automation. So essentially we are making construction faster, more cost effective and more environmentally friendly.Martin: What is so unique about this kind of business? Is it some kind of technology game where you have some kind of IPs so nobody else can compete with you in this kind of segment for cost effectiveness, speed etc.? What is your unique or secret source?Chris: We are 3D printing houses.Martin: Yes, but others could do this as well. So the question then is, if you are trying to automate the construction work by 3D printing houses, what keeps others from doing the same what you do, so basically acquiring the same customers and delivering on this construction automation?Chris: By always having the best technology.Martin: How do you make sure of that? Are you having some kind of IP or do you have some kind of exclusive technology partnerships?Chris: Yes to both. I mean from an IP perspective yes, building al so from partnering with the right people as well.Martin: How did you get about this kind of business idea? At what point in time did your entrepreneurial bug bites you again and said: Chris, I need to do this kind of business.Chris: I will give an example, my original goal of Appsitude was to be able to have a company that I could then have money to sell/fund a bigger dream project of mine and I think that, I dont know how young I got it but I always envisioned myself in like a creator or a builder to some regard.So what happened was I began realizing we could do a lot of things with this technology, I begun seeing us like building cities and doing a lot of cool things and like building the future, whether building a house or building entire cities and communities and everything in between. That became one of my visions and really kind of passion project I guess you could say that ended up becoming what it is now today.Martin: Chris, what is the current status of projects that you c ould deliver on? So could you rebuild the Trump Tower for example?Chris: Technically right now you can actually build buildings with our technology, but it is not as cost effective yet for buildings. So you can save up to 90% of labor costs for houses up to three storeys. But when you start building buildings, we are not releasing the technology until next year, for actual building.Martin: Okay. Now the question is, I understand that it saves up to 90% of labor costs, but from my perspective, I would be rather interested in what are the initial installment costs of creating this building and are the total lifetime costs so to speak? And how does it compare to alternative solutions?Chris: I dont know a lot of details in the Trump Tower because I have heard of it but I dont know how tall it is or anything. I mean from a comparative cost perspective, the reason I gave percentage because it varies completely on a case by case basis, because buildings can be built in many different ways. So you are saying can I give a cost example of how much cheaper it is or? Sorry I just want to make sure I understand.Martin: Sure, what you are telling me is that you are saving x% which is quite high like 90% or so off the labor costs. But labor costs is only one component of the total costs, for example, for initial installment or total cost of ownership. Because if I would be thinking about whether there are several alternatives how I could construct my building.First I could go to, lets call it a traditional construction company. They hire some people, put some stones above each other and then there is a house. And then it will continue to live for 30 years or so with some kind of operation cost, etc. Then I can calculate how much are the lifetime costs for this type of building over those 30 years.Now alternative 2, which is basically Cazza, how much would it cost similar building, I am just getting some kind of ballpark to build the initial building and then how long would i t maybe live, would it be living longer, shorter? Because then I would compare the total cost of ownership for a building with traditional means of construction and then with the one of 3D printing.Chris: Yes, so putting it to perspective we are 3D printing currently with concrete and the concrete mixes that we have are able to cost far less to produce than typical concrete but it is still durable so it is still hurricane proof and everything that you would expect typical concrete to be, besides saving on the material costs as well because the concrete mix and the way that it works with the technology. I mean it would be a typical building for the most part. If you are talking about houses, I prefer to focus on houses right now because we do not really have the technology for buildings until next year. But specifically for houses it is difficult the ability of what a normal concrete house would be.Martin: Great stuff. Are you currently already in the process of talking to potential customers and partners? Or are you only focusing currently on making the technology work?Chris: We are launching, we are going to begin to actually selling the technology in December 2016, this year. Mostly we have been talking in terms of forming partnerships with real estate development companies and construction companies that want to acquire the technology. Some of the things that happened was, we are mostly just forming these partnerships right now across the world.Martin: Why are you trying to sell the technology where you could also try to target the end customers directly? Why did you decide for being a a technology provider and targeting the middle man? And selling technology versus selling houses?Chris: That is just the market that we want to focus on because we think it is a simpler business model. I mean we could change that maybe. But right now we think it is just easier to focus on it.Martin: Good stuff. Where do you think Cazza will be heading towards maybe in the nex t 4-5 years? So what is your vision?Chris: Our vision definitely is to spread this technology across the globe, just do some cool things with it. I mean, really, even though it is a business (I know it very well financially), for me at least it is more about the impact it has in the world because from an environmentally friendly stand point. For example construction today causes a lot of air pollution and water pollution and there is a lot of construction waste.This method of construction that we have developed, it eliminates most of that because there is not tons of dust in air and everything, it is just pouring out the concrete and the different materials that are required to build the house. So I am looking forward to seeing, one being the environmental impact that it has in terms of helping the world, and also seeing the structures and buildings and everything that people do with the technology.Martin: Are you also foreseeing using different materials so instead of concrete you are using for example some kind of other regenerative materials like wood, hanf, maybe even some other kind of more garbage products like plastic or something like this?Because I have seen several videos on YouTube for example where they take lets the garbage of plastic and press it and then build a house out of it. So do you foresee yourself doing something like this? Because if you have the technology for the 3D printing, would it be also useable for changing the material input for example?Chris: Yes, we will be doing that. We already are researching new materials and our concrete mix is already like kind of a new material the way that it works, but yes we have been looking at different materials and we have some that we will be announcing. I don’t know when, how soon yet but it is more about passing it from a protocol perspective.I don’t think in the US people would, I am sure there are exceptions with a lot of people wouldn’t like the idea of building a house made of plast ic or recycled materials, so it would be very, kind of more niche specific, at least in the beginning. But the main thing that we care about with the new materials is that the houses are safe to live in, in regards to, if we are not using concrete, we are doing with something like plastic, we need to make sure that it is safe for people to live in. Not necessarily just from a durability stand point but you want to make sure that if it is recycled materials that they are safe materials to actually live in.Martin: Chris, if I am looking at your prior company, it seems to me that the major customer acquisition channel was Craigslist, what do you see at the major customer acquisition channel for Cazza?Chris: Just to clarify I don’t think it was just Craigslist, it was Craigslist in the beginning, for the first year which is what got us started and helped a lot throughout the way, but later on it just became from more networking and kind of travelling and then meeting people who would reach out to us because they knew that we were building Apps and we had clients from around the world, just from news articles that happened about us and things like that people would reach out, so it wasn’t just Craigslist.Our new channel for Cazza, mostly it is just going through our personal network and reaching out to the people that we know, because the thing is through Appsitude, I made friends with a lot of people from all over the world, and some in very high places. So it has allowed us to just kind of show them the technology now and it is just a matter of them doing a few things here and there and then we have it out there.Martin: Good stuff, Chris. Introduction At 12 years old Tabitha’s home life was miserable. Her parents were often neglectful to her basic needs. Instead of buying food and clothing for their daughter Tabitha s parents would escape the heavy burden of parenthood through excessive drinking and other questionable behaviors. Listening Free Essays

Importance of Listening According to Zarefsky, listening is important for three reasons: (1) Accuracy; (2) Feedback; and (3) Assessment. First is accuracy. I can still remember back in my 6th grade this one test given to us by our English teacher. We will write a custom essay sample on Listening or any similar topic only for you Order Now Looking back from today, it was actually more of a listening test than a reading test. Before we begin, our teacher told us to read first the instructions before proceeding. Then she gave out this two pager test about following instructions like this: Write your name in capital letters on the upper right hand corner of the paper and underline your family name. List the top ten movies you like. Draw three stars of varying sizes and encircle the biggest star.  You get the picture. There were about 50 of these instructions! So, I hurriedly answer as much as I can since we were told that it we will be under time pressure. After just five minutes, the teacher announced that it was already time to pass the paper and I wasn’t even half-way! I protested that there was not enough time. She asked me if I was listening when she asked us to read the instructions. I said, â€Å"Of course.† To which, she replied, â€Å"Then, you should have read in the instructions that you are only asked to do item no. 1.† Second reason is to be able to give feedback. I remember one of the fights I had with my then girlfriend Donna. (Not her real name.) She was saying something and but I was too engrossed with in solving this differential equation which was an assignment due next day for Math. Of course, that got her really mad. â€Å"Are you listening?† she angrily asked. â€Å"Of course, dear,† I said. â€Å"Then, tell me what you think?† Confident that I could get away with this, I made a remark on the phrase about assignments. â€Å"Yeah, I know. It must be tough for you. These teachers are driving us nuts,† I consoled her, thinking that I can get away with it. That, of course, made her really mad. She was not talking about assignments. It was actually a sarcastic remark, â€Å"Sorry, I think I’m getting in the way of your assignments.† And so she unleashed the conclusion of the matter, â€Å"I guess I really do get in the way of your assignments. Maybe it’s now time for us to move on.† Then, she walked out on me. That one, I did get clearly, because I was listening intently: She wanted to break up with me. And that brings me to my last point: Assessment. I was able to interpret and evaluate the message. Because I was listening well that time, I understood that she didn’t mean we were ready to discuss another topic or we were supposed to go somewhere. Based on what she said and her reaction, I knew she was really mad and moving on means breaking up. Personal Listening Habits I was able to hear Steve Murell 2007 last year (July 19, 2007) speak on Leading With the Next Generation for 25 minutes. He got his text from 1 Samuel 17:38-40 and while he was expounding on the passage, and to get the most out of his talk, I employed note-taking – a technique which, according to Nwokoreze (1990) is the stage where I would reach the maximum level of understanding. (His talk is also available as pod cast in the Every Nation World Conference (2007) website.) He introduced his talk by first saying that Saul had always been used as an example of a bad leadership but if we will examine his life, it was not all bad. If ever he did only one thing great, this is it. And that introduction really hooked me in. I his teaching, he claimed that there are principles we can actually learn from this two men of God and that is in the area of leadership. We know that Saul was a lot older than David and he is a warrior. During his time, he was able to defeat his enemy using his sword and armor. So, wanting victory for David, he suggested that he should wear it, too. The problem is David was not used to it. So, he reasoned with Saul and asked Saul to allow him just his sling and stones. And to that, Saul agreed. If you would ask me up to now what can we learn from that, I can still tell you without even referring to my notes but I can tell you that the notes really helped me really listen and digest the message. If I had not done so, I would have forgotten it all by now as studies show that this process begins almost right way. (Scott 2002) Besides, taking good notes has been found to aid individuals in remembering what they hear. (Cuesta College Academic Support 2003) Note-taking helped me in two ways: First, it helped me to focus on the focus points of the message. In as much as I was very interested in the topic, there were times that my mind would wander away or be caught up by a particular illustration. For instance, when Steve tell that David and Saul’s story is also a picture of the church, I got lost momentarily because I got caught up in analyzing what it means. I was still figuring out all the parallelism when I heard him say, â€Å"the point is†¦Ã¢â‚¬  As if on cue, I reached out to my pen and paper and write the point. I also jot down what he said that caught me so that I could later refer back to it and meditate or savor it if necessary. There were also times when I become too reflective which is quite distracting in a way. I asked myself (because Steve asked us to evaluate ourselves), â€Å"Am I giving opportunity to those who are under to me rise up in leadership or am I too insecure a leader to let them have the spot light?† Then, he would ask another question but I was still in the middle of my reflection. So, what I did was to pause, write down what I was thinking, and jot down his next question or point and knowing why I was there – to learn how to be a better leader – helped me be effective in my note taking as suggested by Fajardo (1996) and was proven by me. Since Steve spoke for just about 25 minutes, I didn’t have a great deal of difficulty listening to him. I’m used to attending classes where teachers would lecture for more than an hour so his teaching was actually a refreshing break. But, I must admit, though, that too long speeches or lectures literally give me a headache. Just before writing this paper, I came from a whole day academic forum where I had to listen to different speakers lecturing for at least one and a half hours each. I tell you, it was difficult, especially when they say something that is beyond my vocabulary or knowledge. I actually had a headache afterwards. Perhaps, this was due to the fact that I was already very sleepy during the middle of the third session but I still pushed myself to listen. Margaret Sanger’s Speech Margaret, on her speech, addressed the morality of birth control as she said on her opening statements, â€Å"The one issue upon which there seems to be most uncertainty and disagreement exists is the moral side of the subject of Birth Control. He next statement revealed her audience: â€Å"It seemed only natural for us to call together scientists, educators, members of the medical profession and the theologians of all denominations to ask their opinion upon this uncertain and important phase of the controversy.† Sanger seemed to suggest that birth control is a moral imperative. In fact, she said that her belief is that â€Å"the discussion of the moral issue [of birth control] was one which did not solely belong to theologians and to scientists, but belonged to the people.†Ã‚   Therefore, if this is not confined only to specific groups of people but to all people, then it, indeed, is a moral imperative. To drive home her point, she even explained what moral means. According to her, this would have implications of different actions which rely on the mind and the brain and that brain development is very much linked to morality. To those who are saying that birth control is unethical, immoral, or violation of God’s law, she started first with a discussion on morality. According to her, it would be immoral if we are irresponsible and reckless and irresponsible in our actions. We would have the â€Å"finest kind of morality† on the other hand if we are able to think ahead about the actions we plan to take. Then, she went into the discussion of how the progress of women we opposed for the fear the they would be immoral if they were granted freedom. Then, she appealed to the church to have more confidence in them. Then, she discussed the foundations of birth control which she also accepts. She said that the only problem with this in how methods to uphold these principles were carried out. So, she suggested information dissemination which should be done directly by those in the medical field. In this may, â€Å"motherhood may be the function of dignity and choice, rather than one of ignorance a chance,† claimed the speaker. Finally, she went back again on the concept of planning ahead so that population control would begin at conception instead of resorting to the killing of infants, abandoning children, and abortion which is less civilized and gives life a lower value. Then, she concluded by encouraging people that the masses are becoming wiser and have been giving enough thought for their conduct. Winter Days free essay sample

The 2 steps of teaching a 3 year old how to ski is teach them Pizza and French Fries. Then it moves to the turning by moving the knees. My winter days consist of watching kids go down a mountain. It makes my day happy and unforgettable because I’m with co-workers and supervisors that are my friends that act like my family. The best thing about my job is the kids, just seeing and watching their faces turn from scared to having fun makes my day. During school I have to deal with the drama of my classmates, but when I’m in the work area I toss those thoughts aside and focus on my talents. The people at my workplace all have different identities, but we all have something in common. We all love what we do. We have regular lessons, children lessons, or snowboard lessons. I, of course, work with children because I love how they show smiles and their laughter to you when they are having fun. My supervisor called me over since the little girl wanted a girl instructor. I got down to her level as I knew she was somewhat shy because she wouldnt look at me in the eye for a while. She was scared because she thought that we would just let her go and get hurt but I wouldnt let that happen. I know how to deal because I’m used to these kinds of kids. The girl was still scared but she got easier to work with from time to time. You just have to go slow with it and not rush. One of the weekends we were teaching, I was with a group of five children. The kids all knew how to ski on Big Magic, which is what we call â€Å"the 2nd level†. We were done with the lesson when my supervisor called for me to come to lineup on the radio. I got all the parents to their children as I made my way to lineup. I came up to my supervisor and he spoke, â€Å"Emily, these people said they had you two years ago when you taught their son† I remembered the faces and I still know the son’s name. I was amazed that they remembered me even though they hadn’t been to the mountain for two years. Teaching kids how to ski is a talent my family members have inside of us. My sister and brother had this job also but they were different instructors. This kind of talent is something that will make me more intelligent and more responsible in the future. With this kind of experience that I had for at least three going on four years, I believe that I am capable of having the challenge for taking care of kids in the future. I always put on a smile whenever I’m teaching kids and when I’m talking to customers that are having trouble finding their way. I am helpful to anyone who is in need of help.

Here’s a roster in which I’ve accumulated such references for other parts and elements of the body. 1. Arm: something resembling an arm in form and/or function, a part of a garment covering the arm, might or power or ability, a component or division, or support 2. Blood: refers to kinship or lineage, or to a quality intrinsic to someone because it’s supposedly a hereditary trait, or to bloodshed; as a verb, refers to providing a hound with a scented object to prompt a hunt, or to introducing to bloodshed or killing 3. Bone: the core, essence, or heart of something, or the design or framework of a composition, or a subject (usually in the idiom â€Å"bone of contention†) or an inclination or talent or, more often, the lack thereof (â€Å"I don’t have an artistic bone in my body†), or something intended to placate (â€Å"Throw him a bone†) 4. Breast: the location of emotion, something resembling a breast, or part of a garment that covers the literal breast (the sometimes-synonym chest first referred to a box and then was applied, by association, to the section of the body) 5. According to a recent article in Human Quest, a liberal Episcopalian publication, Ms. Roosevelt, "...gathered evidence and pressured the President to sign a series of Executive Orders to stop the discrimination in the New Deal projects. That was effective, and the share of blacks in New Deal work projects expanded" ("Eleanor Roosevelt, 'First Lady of the World'" (2)). This commitment to civil rights would be carried forward and later influence the desegregation of the armed forces under President Truman. Eleanor Roosevelt's political activism expanded to include women's rights and brought about the public's awareness that gender should be treated as a minority component. As a US Delegate to the United Nations she was instrumental in the writing and advocacy for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The Declaration begins with article 1 stating, "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood" ("Universal Declaration of Human Rights"). Eleanor campaigned to have the wording of this important passage changed from "all men" to its current form ("Eleanor Roosevelt: The World's First Lady."(3)). This was one of the most influential documents regarding women's rights to date and was vital to securing the future of women's rights (Bunch 488). Eleanor was making her influence felt 60 years ago in the arena of women's rights on the international stage. Her pr ogressive thinking continues to reverberate through the vision where women are afforded equality in the workplace and within the law. Competition in the coffee industry INTRODUCTION Today we stand witness to a new coffee era, one made up of Caffe Lattes, Espresso Macchiatos, Cappuccinos and Frappuccinos. Specialty Coffee is here to stay and no one will be more eager to tell you that than Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks, the worlds largest specialty coffee bar. The study of Starbucks Corporation leads one on a multifaceted journey through an organizations insinuation into a culture, its dominance of a market and its creation of a brand synonymous with loyalty, integrity and longevity. Ever since it first spread through the Moslem world in the sixteenth century, coffee has played a pivotal role in society by providing meeting places for intellectuals from all sides of life to converge. As coffee was slowly introduced to the European world it was recognized for both its sociability and its taste. Soon Coffee houses were prevalent throughout Europe and were the natural locations for political, literary and societal debate. It crossed the Atlantic Ocean in the mid-seventeenth century and replaced beer as New York Citys favorite morning drink. Starbucks Corporation is an international coffee and coffeehouse chain based in Seattle, Washington, United States. Starbucks is the largest coffeehouse company in the world, with 16,635 stores in 49 countries, including 11,068 (6,764 Company Owned, 4,304 Franchised) in the United States, followed by nearly 1,000 in Canada and more than 800 in Japan. Starbucks sells drip brewed coffee, espresso-based hot drinks, other hot and cold drinks, snacks, and items such as mugs and coffee beans. Through the Starbucks Entertainment division and Hear Music brand, the company also markets books, music, and film. Many of the companys products are seasonal or specific to the locality of the store. Starbucks-brand ice cream and coffee are also offered at grocery stores. Michael E. Porter provided a framework that models an industry as being influenced by five forces. The strategic business manager seeking to develop an edge over rival firms can use this model to better understand the industry context in which the firm operates. Porters Five Forces of Competitive Position: Industry Rivalry The dynamics of the industry rivalry within the specialty coffee industry has changed dramatically since 1987. Unlike the early days of the specialty coffee industry when Starbucks competed primarily against other small-scale specialty coffee retailers they now compete against companies of varying sizes and different exposures to specialty coffee. Starbucks competes with a variety of smaller scale specialty coffee shops, mostly concentrated in different regions of the country. All of these specialty coffee chains are differentiated from Starbucks in one way or another. Coffee Bean competes with Starbucks. They are similar to Starbucks in their attempt to create a third-place but distinguish themselves by creating an entirely different atmosphere. Where Starbucks strives to create an upscale European atmosphere, Coffee Bean tries to implement a more American feel to their coffee houses. Often they will use knotty pine cabinetry, numerous fireplaces and soft seating. Also they offer a barrage of magazines and newspapers as well as the guarantee of speedy service and free refills. In addition, they offer free WiFi, drive through accessibility and meeting rooms for rent. Through their subsidiary VKI technologies, they have become the world leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of coffee making equipment and related products. In addition to these smaller scale specialty coffee companies, Starbucks must now compete against two of the largest companies in the fast food industry who have recently entered the specialty coffee segment. The first of these competitors is Dunkin Donuts, who claims to be the worlds largest coffee and baked goods chain. Currently, Dunkin Donuts operates about 5,500 franchises around the United States, 80 stores in Canada and 1,850 throughout the rest of the world. In the past couple years the franchise has put enormous emphasis on their coffee beverages. They serve coffee beverages in an assortment of types and styles including espresso, cappuccino and latte. They also serve their coffee in an assortment of flavors including French Vanilla, hazelnut, cinnamon and numerous others. The largest industry rival currently facing Starbucks is the McDonalds restaurant fast food chain. McDonalds originated from a single San Bernardino, California hamburger stand, which opened in 1948, and has turned into what is now the worlds largest restaurant chain with over 14,000 restaurants in the United States alone. The key to McDonalds success has been the consistent quality standards they achieve for their food, coupled with their quick service and low prices. 10 years ago Starbucks and McDonalds were at complete opposite ends of the spectrum in the restaurant industry. However, McDonalds, encouraged by the success of its upgraded drip coffee, began testing numerous drinks sold under the name McCafe. Starbucks meanwhile, with its rapid expansion, was adding drive-through windows and numerous breakfast sandwiches, similar to the Egg McMuffins served at McDonalds, to their stores. These measures have drawn the two companies closer together as competitors due to an encroachment into the demographic consumer base made by each company. In summary, the current impact of the industry rivalry force created by the competition between specialty coffee retailers is very high, especially as contrasted to what it was at the time of Starbucks rapid expansion twenty years ago. The growth of the industry has slowed while the number of competitors within the industry has increased. Both of these factors, in addition to Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds high strategic stakes in the specialty coffee industry, have caused this change from weak to strong industry rivalry. Potential for New Entrants Another of the five forces in Porters model, which has changed significantly since the late 80s when we analyze the current environment in which Starbucks competes, is the potential for new entrants. As stated earlier, the primary deterrents to entry in the specialty coffee industry are the various barriers to entry. The economies of scale within the specialty coffee industry have increased as the size of the top players has increased. Companies such as Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds have national distribution channels through which they can transport their specialty coffee at a relatively low cost compared to potential new entrants who have no such developed distribution systems. These larger companies are also able to economize on their accounting operations and marketing budgets by facilitating their specialty coffee operations from the same department as for all segments of their businesses. Finally, these larger corporations are also able to reap economies of scale through their purchasing by negotiating long term contracts with coffee farmers and purchasing coffee beans in bulk quantities at discount prices. There is numerous cost disadvantages imposed on new entrants that are independent of the economies of scale considerations. As the industry matures, the ability to access distribution channels and select from the highest quality coffee beans has becoming increasingly difficult. Most of the favorable store locations within the larger metropolitan areas have already been occupied by current competitors within the specialty coffee industry. Additionally, many companies now have proprietary product technology involved in the production of their specialty coffee as well as lower per unit costs due to an experience curve. Product differentiation within the specialty coffee industry has moved away from the purely objective and defined traits such as the taste of the coffee, convenience of the stores and prices charged. The industry has progressed toward more subjective traits such as the ambience of the store, the social responsibility of the company and brand identification. Many companies have gained very loyal customer bases stemming from their past advertisements, customer service, objective product differentiations and early entry into the industry. All of this makes it more difficult for new entrants to gain a solid customer base. From the analysis above, it can be ascertained that the barriers to entry in the specialty coffee industry have increased substantially. As a consequence, the potential threat of new entrants has gone down. Since, the industry does not have large capital requirements, smaller specialty coffee shops are still prevalent throughout the United States and the potential for more of them to enter the industry is still present. However, these new entrants can be disregarded given the unlikely nature of their concerted expansion and the inconsequential effects they have singly on the overall demand in the consumer market. Substitute Products The force created by substitute products in the specialty coffee industry has decreased. Many companies that presented the specialty coffee industry with a threat in the form of substitute products have actually entered the industry and now compete directly by offering their own premium coffee selections. The primary substitute products still posing a threat to the specialty coffee industry are the caffeinated soft drinks offered by Pepsi and Coca-Cola. However, even these substitute products pose little threat to the premium coffee industry. In the past five years, studies done on the percentage of meals or snacks that included a carbonated soft drink as opposed to coffee have shown a reversal in consumer preference. Coffee has gradually gained preference over carbonated soft drinks. This is mostly attributed to the health concerns associated with carbonated soft drinks and the new evidence showing coffee as a relatively healthy alternative. Supplier Bargaining Power With the extensive growth in the specialty coffee industry, supplier bargaining power has changed in numerous ways. In 1987, when the first Starbucks was conceived, the farmers from whom Starbucks purchased its premium coffee beans were numerous, small and unconnected to one another. Currently, many of the farmers who sell to Starbucks and other premium coffee chains are united by an initiative known as fair trade certified coffee, which was organized by TransFair USA. Under this initiative, companies such as Starbucks are given the opportunity to advertise their coffee as being fair trade certified if they purchase from coffee suppliers that are democratically owned cooperatives. This initiative was designed to ensure that the coffee farmers would be compensated fairly for their crops. Their increased unity under this initiative worked as a positive externality by increasing their ability to exert bargaining power over their buyers. The fair trade coffee certification is looked at by consumers in their decision of where to purchase their premium coffee. Thus, although the farmers are still numerous and small they are now connected through the initiative launched by TransFair USA and act in some respects like one large entity. Although the farmers of premium Arabica beans are still in constant competition with the substitute Robusta coffee bean growers, their bargaining power is not significantly diminished by this threat due to the unlikelihood of a big premium coffee retailer adopting the substitution. When Starbucks first began purchasing premium Arabica coffee beans in the late 1980s, they executed purchases incrementally throughout the year. Currently, they lock their coffee suppliers into long-term contracts to dilute potential price volatility. These contracts have stipulations within them which place a financial burden on the coffee suppliers if they choose to supply a different company. By creating these switching costs for the premium coffee suppliers, Starbucks has diminished their ability to play one buyer against another, which decreases their bargaining power. A last component to the analysis of supplier bargaining power within the current specialty coffee industry environment is the threat of forward integration. Technically, the farmers can forward integrate by setting up smaller coffee shops and brewing their own batches. This is, however, extremely unlikely and has yet to occur. When comparing the bargaining power of suppliers today in the specialty coffee industry to the bargaining power of suppliers during the late 1980s, it is apparent that suppliers are more powerful today. The increased unity among the coffee farmers, decreased significance of specialty coffee retailers purchases as a proportion of premium coffee bean sales and increased importance placed on high quality coffee beans by the purchasers have all acted to increase the bargaining power of the supplier group. Although Starbucks has locked some of the coffee suppliers into long-term contracts not all suppliers are affected; thus, the supplier bargaining power is only ma rginally diminished by that tactic. Bargaining Power of Buyers The last component of Michael Porters five forces analysis to be applied to the modern specialty coffee industry is the force created by the bargaining power of buyers. The primary buyers in the specialty coffee industry remain individual consumers, who neither engage in concerted behavior nor individually purchase in large volumes relative to the total sales of a corporation such as Starbucks. Unlike the late 1980s, however, there are a few buyers who purchase in large volumes. These large buyers are typically other multinational corporations who choose to serve Starbucks brewed coffee in their offices. However, the effects of losing one of these buyers to a competitor would not be detrimental to a company with a large sales volume such as Starbucks. Neither the individual consumers nor the multinational corporations who purchase specialty coffee commit a significant fraction of their resources to these purchases. This makes the buyers less sensitive to price fluctuations and gives the players within the specialty coffee industry more control over pricing. This acts to decrease the bargaining power of both the buyer groups. The expansion of the specialty coffee industry created a wider array of competitors who offered high quality specialty coffee. This made it much harder for the players in the specialty coffee industry to differentiate themselves through quality and turned quality into the industry standard. In addition to the increasing quality standardization which specialty coffee has undergone, the buyers face no switching costs and have an enormous selection of retailers from whom they can buy. The buyers of specialty coffee do pose a credible threat of backward integration. This threat can be carried out if a buyer chooses to start a mom and pop specialty coffee store in close proximity to an established specialty coffee store. Same-store sales are roughly 20% lower in Starbucks stores located within a two block vicinity of mom-and-pop specialty coffee stores. The ability of buyers to backward integrate is enhanced by the availability of all information regarding the demand, market pricing, and supplier costs in the specialty coffee industry through sources such as the World Wide Web. With full information, the buyer is in a better position to ensure that they pay a favorable price and receive an appropriate level of quality from the product. The amount of bargaining power that can be exerted by the buyers within the specialty coffee industry has increased as a result of the availability of information regarding market variables. This along with the other previously discussed changes to the dynamics of buyer bargaining power has increased its overall magnitude from the level it was at in the late 1980s. Limitations of Porters Five Force Model Porters model is a effective tool used to identify whether new products, services or businesses have the potential to be profitable. However it can also be very illuminating when used to understand the balance of power in other situations. Porter argues that five forces determine the profitability of an industry. At the heart of industry are rivals and their competitive strategies linked to, for example, pricing or advertising; but, he contends, it is important to look beyond ones immediate competitors as there are other determines of profitability. Specifically, there might be competition from substitutes products or services. These alternatives may be perceived as substitutes by buyers even though they are part of a different industry. An example would be plastic bottles, cans and glass bottle for packaging coffee for Starbucks. There may also be potential threat of new entrants, although some competitors will see this as an opportunity to strengthen their position in the market by ensuring, as far as they can, customer loyalty. Finally, it is important to appreciate that Starbucks purchase from suppliers and sell to buyers. If they are powerful they are in a position to bargain profits away through reduced margins, by forcing either cost increases or price decreases. This relates to the strategic option of vertical integration, when Starbucks acquires, or mergers with, a supplier or customer and thereby gains greater control over the chain of activities which leads from basic materials through to final consumption. It is important to be aware that this model has further limitations in todays market environment; as it assumes relatively static market structures. Based originally on the economic situation in the eighties with its strong competition and relatively stable market structures, it is not able to take into account new business models and the dynamism of the industries, such as technological innovations and dynamic market entrants from start-ups that will completely change business models within short times. For instance, coffee and soft drinks is often considered as being highly competitive. The industry structure is constantly being revolutionized by innovation that indicates Five Forces model being of limited value since it represents no more than snapshots of a moving picture. Therefore, it is not advisable to develop a strategy solely on the basis of Porters models Haberberg and Rieple, but to examine it in addition to other strategic frameworks of SWOT and PEST analysis. Nevertheless, that does not mean that Porters theories became invalid. What needs to be done is to adopt the model with the knowledge of their limitations and to use them as a part of a larger framework of management tools, techniques and theories. This approach, however, is advisable for the application of every business model. CONCLUSION Any company must seek to understand the nature of its competitive environment if it is to be successful in achieving its objectives and in establishing appropriate strategies. If a company fully understands the nature of the Porters five forces, and particularly appreciates which one is the most important, it will be in a stronger position to defend itself against any threats and to influence the forces with its strategy. The situation is fluid, and the nature and relative power of the forces will change. Consequently, the need to monitor and stay aware is continuous. Some issues during the implementation of these Five Forces are crucially important for organizations to build long-term business strategy and sustaining competitive advantages rather than simply list the forces. Successful use of the Porter Model Analysis includes identifying the sources of competition, the strength and likelihood of that competition existing, and strategic recommendations for the action a company should take to in order to develop barriers to competition. Having applied Michael Porters five forces model to the specialty coffee environment which confronted Starbucks in 2007, a conclusion can be logically derived regarding how the proportional effects of each force on the competition within the specialty coffee industry has changed since 1987. Specifically, the force created by industry rivalry has gone from one grounded in strategies of differentiation and focus while discouraging price wars to an extremely competitive environment where differentiation is increasingly difficult and price wars are looming. The strength of the force imposed by the potential for new entrants has decreased as a result of more formidable barriers to entry. The bargaining power of both suppliers and buyers has increased as a result of increased unity among the suppliers and the accessibility of information to the buyers. The threat of substitutes is still insignificant given the continued declining sales of carbonated soft drinks compared to coffee and speci fically specialty coffee.

As Cayla Mills once said, â€Å"You never know strong you are†¦ until being strong is the only choice you have.† People in books, movies, and even in real-life don’t know their true strength until being strong is the only option they have. People will even become stronger and will demonstrate their strength by facing tough decisions and by dealing with their problems. Characters in books frequently demonstrate their true strength by overcoming obstacles in life. Throughout the books Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, characters demonstrate their strength by facing their problems. It is when they learn to speak up for themselves that they find their true strength and become even stronger than they were before. In the story Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Melinda discovers her true strength through her problems with bullying. During the party over the summer, Melinda was raped and had not been able to speak up for herself. After the rape, she called the cops on the guy who had raped her. People had not treated her fairly because they thought she was strange for calling the cops at the party. She had not been able to tell anybody about what had really happened. Throughout the story, Melinda suffers to speak to other people. Since the story is told in first-person, the reader can understand the situations Melinda has suffered through. They feel her pain when Rachel walks up to her during the first day and says to her, â€Å"I hate you.† They also understand her difficulties with speaking up for herself. During the beginning, there are often conversations involving Melinda without her saying a word. When she decides to speak up for herself in the spring, she discovers her true strength and is able to tell Rachel, her ex-best friend, about the rape. Also, because Laurie Halse Anderson used symbolism ef fectively throughout the novel, the reader is able to understand Melinda in relation to a tree. Similar to a tree, Melinda hibernates in the winter and goes dormant, but gains the strength the speak up for herself in the spring. Another example from the story Speak is when Melinda has to protect herself from Andy Evans. When she is attacked once again by Andy Evans in the janitor’s closet toward the end of the book, she is given two options: to let Andy Evans gain control of her and possibly rape her a second time, or to defend herself against Andy Evans, despite her fear. She chooses to stand up against Andy Evans and gains the courage to say â€Å"no† to him, which is what she wasn’t able to say during the rape at the party. When  he assaults her further, she grabs a piece of the broken mirror and uses it to harm Andy Evans, disabling his speaking ability. During the entire first marking period, she tried to hide from mirrors so that she can’t look at herself. When she used the broken mirror to defend herself, it showed that she had the strength to face herself and to see that the rape had not been her fault. Through this decision she has demonstrated her true strength, and shows that she finally has the strength to protect herself from Andy Evans. Throughout the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, Arnold must face both his problems at home and his problems at school in Reardan. At the beginning of the book, Arnold is treated poorly by the Indians on the rez for being bold enough to leave the rez and to go to Reardan. Arnold is also treated unfairly by the white people at Reardan for being the only Indian at the school. Toward the end of the book, however, Arnold gains the strength to start making new friends at Reardan. Even when his grandmother is, ironically, hit by a drunk driver and killed, he is able to demonstrate the strength he has gained from these new friends and from the hard choices he has made. At the beginning of the book, Arnold is faced with two options: to either stay on the rez and face his drunken father along with the rest of the drunken Indians, or leave the rez to go to Reardan. It would have been easier to stay on the rez, knowing that he would not be treated the same by the Indians after leaving, but he chose to go to Reardan. Arnold was bold enough to leave the rez to go to Reardan, where he had decided that he would be able to get a better education. Arnold is certainly not treated the same by the Indians after leaving, nor is he treated fairly by the students at Reardan. On the rez, he is frequently called an â€Å"apple,† meaning that he is white on the inside on red on the outside. By facing his problems head on, he is able to demonstrate true strength and is ultimately able to gain the trust of many students at Reardan. Cayla Mills once said, â€Å"You never know how strong you are†¦ until being strong is the only choice you have.† The quote describes how you never know how strong you really are, until the times in life that you must be strong. By facing one’s problems, it is possible to demonstrate true strength. In many real life situations and in books, the strongest characters find their true strength through suffering and often don’t know how strong they are until faced with difficult decisions.

The Importance Of Integrity And Self Respect - 1604 Words

Integrity means being true to ourselves and being honest, upright, and honorable in all of our dealings with others. When we are guided by integrity, our thoughts and words are in line with each other; our actions align with our principles, our conduct speaks for us, more eloquently than words ever could. It becomes the basis for both reputation and self-respect. Integrity demands courage but delivers untroubled sleep. Developing integrity requires internal honesty, because we can’t be honest with others unless we are honest with ourselves. It requires self awareness, since we cannot accurately communicate what we do not know. The amount of integrity that one has, defines who they are as a person. Being a United States Marine means taking all of your integrity and letting every ounce of it show in everything that you do. People of integrity can be counted on to stand up for what is right, even if it is execrated, and to behave with dignity even when there is no one around to see one perform these actions. Integrity allows other people to put their trust in us because they know that we value our commitments and seek to live by them in all things. It is one of the cornerstones of loving relationships and shared endeavors.
